Consultancy does cost money, so let’s take a look at how I charge for my time.

Rates are negotiable for the right job and the right company, so always feel free to ask. There are substantial reductions too for the following.

  • Long term contracts
  • Local companies
  • Places commutable by bike from Broadstone
  • 100% remote work earns maximum discount

How do you calculate your rate?

I scrape Linux Recruit about once a month using WebScraper.io and then upload the data to an S3 bucket on AWS. This triggers a lambda function to process the data and then amend this web page and invalidate the CloudFront cache. When I upload new articles to the site, the page is updated automatically using Github ACtions and the invoke-aws-lambda action.

Based on the statistics, I take the median value for permanent work and then subtract £4,125 pa for every day of the week I can work from home. This maximises the discount for remote work. This is the base rate. For contract work, I charge the modal value.

Job stats

Here are the latest statistics from the Linux Recruit scraped data..

Can I get some free chat time?

Sure. Drop me an email I’ll give you a call at a time and date to suit you or we’ll do it by mail only if you prefer.

We can talk about what you’re trying to do, whether that’s feasible in AWS/Cloud, what the best way to go about it is and of course, most importantly, what is the broad cost of it likely to be.

Now it might be something simple like hosting a fairly high demand website or some global app or something, but I can help you clarify what to focus on and how to get it done.

I do the infrastructure stuff and you just need devs to make the software. I also do complete documentation for projects as part of the workload because that’s critical. The reason we understand stuff is because somebody else wrote it down in a manner that I was able to understand. With examples. Examples that worked.

Budget

I read somewhere that in software projects, 80% of the budget is used to complete 80% of the project. The remaining 20% of the project requires and additional 80% of the budget. Before setting out, make a budget, be realistic and stick to it; even if something costs a pound more than budget, say “No” to it. For success, you have to live within your means.
